Mid-Century Modern Bedroom Inspiration

Mid-Century modern isn't a style that I have worked with a whole lot. While I appreciate the clean lines, it just isn't a style that I have in my own home. To get a better feel for it, I decided to create a Digital Design Board, showcasing a couple of mid-century modern pieces. Paired with some current accessories, this look is fresh and updated with a vintage flair. 

When I saw this pink chair, I had to build a board around it. It's so chic and that pop of color is perfect for a neutral bedroom. I also really loved the lines of this amazing dresser.  And the plush carpet would be so cozy underfoot in the mornings as you're dragging yourself out of bed. The gold sunburst mirror highlights the gold accents on the dresser, and the patterned pillows bring some fun to the design.

All of the items on this design board are from Chairish. It's a really cool website where you can score all kinds of vintage furniture and accessories. No matter what style you have, they have something for you. One of the cool things about the site is that you can make an offer on the item you want. Items are sold by individual sellers (Yes....you could sell your vintage goods as well!) and they can choose to accept your offer or you may have to meet a reserve price.  Either way, it's a great way to get a good deal on an item you love.

Spooktacular Serving Pieces

 As I was on the prowl for beautiful Thanksgiving serving pieces, my eye kept being drawn to the fun patterns and colors of Halloween. I really have never decorated for Halloween or had a Halloween party. We don't usually like spooky things around here. But the oranges and blacks and birds and pumpkins were so cute, I just had to show you what I found. These items are oh so spooktacular without being over the top gory or gross.  And did I mention adorable?

Vibrant Summer Patio

At this moment, my back patio is in sad shape.  It's messy and jumbled,  houses the lawn mower and a small four wheeler, and is just a hot mess. Mismatched pots, randomly placed tables and chairs, and toys just add to the hodge podge feel of it. 

With a Fourth of July Barbecue deadline approaching, I have been motivated to make it look presentable on a budget. I came up with a color scheme that will look great for the Fourth of July as well as year round.

Let's start with the color scheme. My front door is currently painted Florida Keys Blue.  At Easter, I added a monogram bunny with a yellow bow to the front door and I really like how the yellow popped from the turquoise blue.  When I planted flowers in my pots and window box, I planted red and it all looks really great together. It gave me the idea to use that color scheme for my back patio.  Adding the navy is great for the Fourth of July, but it also grounds the otherwise uber-vibrant color scheme. 

While it is not in the budget for me to go out and buy everything brand new or all that is on this design board, I can still achieve the look using what I currently have or DIYing new items.  I already have two of the white chairs from Ikea that I will use, as well as an assortment of throw pillows.  I plan on making a yellow rug similar to this one, and for pops of color, spray paint will be my best friend. 

Remember this ladder?  I used it as a plant stand last year. It has seen better days, for sure. I'm still going to use it as a plant stand and a fresh coat of spray paint will make it all better......in red!  

I have so many mismatched pots.  They are all getting a coat of paint for a more cohesive look. 

I have two of these shelves. My hubby made them for me out of pallet wood and they once housed books in my youngest daughter's room before we redid it. They were white and now they are a fresh red.  I think I'm going to hang them on the wall under my patio above a table to house extra condiments, paper goods, or whatever is needed for barbecues. 

I have been working hard this week to get all of this stuff painted.  So. Much. Spray paint! I think I have gone through three cans of red, and one blue, white, and yellow so far. But in the end, it is less expensive than buying all new things. Can't wait to share with you when I'm done!

Digital Design Board

I had an awesome time creating a Master Bedroom Design Board for Dana!  If you remember a couple of months ago, I did a Design Board giveaway, and Dana was our winner!  She said she wanted a Master Bedroom plan using blacks, blues, and grays.  I think the colors work so well together, and give off a sophisticated, elegant air. Reader Design Dilemma: Lucy's Space

I recently heard from a friend, asking for some advice for her space. She writes:

First of all, I'm loving your blog. It's become one of my favorites. Secondly, I was wondering if I could pick your designer brain about a space in my house. We've always had a big picture over the fireplace but there so much wall on either side I wonder if there shouldn't be something there too. Or maybe just something taller on the top side shelves. I've included a photo. If it's not too much trouble I would love some advice.

Let's take a look at her design dilemma.

The dilemma:  Asymmetrical wall.  The fireplace isn't centered on the wall and the built-ins are different sizes on either side. Currently, although the picture above the fireplace is large, it isn't a large enough scale given the size of the wall as a whole. 

So, here are three options I came up with for Lucy using her current gray wall color.  Three styles of design that share the same concept: embracing the asymmetrical wall with a modern gallery wall. 

One:  Cottage Chic

In order for the off-centered fireplace not to dominate your eye when you look at it, I added a sophisticated gallery wall that tricks your eye.  The soothing color palette of blues and greens are calming and chic. With the gray as the background, pops of teal and lime are all this space needs for added color.  A wood-toned light fixture, candlesticks, and natural fiber basket for holding toys or blankets grounds the space along with the boxwood topiaries and succulents. Two teal lamps flank the space for added light. (Most of the frames, the lamps, and some accessories are all from Target, making this an affordable design option.)

Two: Nautical Americana

This gallery wall, on a somewhat larger scale, also does the trick of drawing your eye up from the asymmetrical design of the built-ins.  Using nautical art found on Etsy, and anchoring the room with natural fiber baskets for storage and sea grass bin for holding toys or blankets, this space screams classic comfort.  My favorites items in this space?  The basket light fixture and the combination of red, navy, and turquoise. 

Three: Hipster Prep

This space is so fun, young, and fresh!  If you like a more contemporary, trendy look, then this one is it.  Most of the artwork is typography finds from Etsy.  And keeping the walls neutral with gray, it is easy to add punches of color with artwork, pillows, vases, and picture frames.  Also, since the walls are neutral, changing out the accessories in the room are a simple fix if you want to tone it down at any point. The sputnik light fixture and sleek chair add contemporary sophistication. 

I hope this helps Lucy envision her space and the potential it holds! To embrace the asymmetrical wall and go big with art or frames to draw the eye up.

Aubergine Orchid Digital Design Board

While I'm in the middle of finishing up my girls' shared bedroom space, I have been dreaming of making our master bedroom an inviting place. It seems that it is always the last to get done, and I am looking forward to making our room a retreat.  

I started by going to my local hardware store and picking out paint colors. I knew that the "purple" range was where I was headed.  I have been drooling over ZGallerie's "Aubergine" accessories and decor for a year or two now. Not to mention that "Radiant Orchid" is Pantone's 2014 color of the year.  

I seem to always be drawn to these hues, whether in clothing, makeup, or home decor.  Here are two palettes that I came up with. These are all Valspar colors. 

Looking at these two sets of colors, I am drawn more to the one on the left.  It looks a little more grown up to me and not so pastel.  I'm not going to be painting the walls these colors, but my master bath may get a splash of some color. I'm not sure yet. I will probably use these colors for a DIY art piece, and used them as a basis for finding fabric. 

Here is the Digital Design Board I created for our master bedroom.  It gives me a better idea at how it will all come together when I'm done. I'm not planning on buying a new bed. I used the one shown just for the purpose of creating the board.  You will find a link below for each item on the board. 


1. P. Kaufmann Hip Berry Fabric  I love this beautiful fabric.  The combination of the gray, purples and pops of green aren't too feminine, but still have the romantic quality I'm going for. I'm thinking of using this one for drapes and a throw pillow. $22/yard

2. P. Kaufmann Slick Amethyst Fabric This fabric coordinates well with the Hip Berry fabric.  I love bringing in a geometric print with a floral one.  This fabric will be used to recover a chair seat as well as throw pillows. (That awesome thrift store chair find is about to get made over.)  $12/yard

3. Land of Nod "H" throw pillow  I won't necessarily use all of the pillows on this board, but I added a few to have options. This one is only $19.

4. Target Fergano pillow $26.99

5. Surya Plum Pillow from Lamps Plus  $25.99

6. Warp Speed Art from ZGallerie This art piece is pretty pricey but beautiful. I may DIY some art for the area above the bed.

9. Layla Grace Nightstand At $579, this nightstand is a bit out of my price range, especially having to buy two.  I think I can buy an inexpensive one from IKEA and paint it to look similar to this gray one. 

10. Oblong Lilac Pillow At $15.99 this velvet beauty is a steal!

11. Tufted Ottoman  At Target.com for $52.49.  A great price for a big impact.

16. ZGallerie Idochine Rug  $299.95 I obviously won't buy three rugs, but I gave myself options to see how they look and a variance of price depending on budget.  This rug is very plush and would be wonderful in a bedroom.  The more inexpensive one from Target is lower pile. 

I think if our room comes out anything like the one on the Digital Design Board, we will be really happy with it!
